Assistant Director, Education and Prevention Apply now Job no: 516235 Work type: Administrative & Professional Senior management: Vice President for Student AffairsDepartment: Hokie WellnessLocation: Blacksburg Area Categories: Student Affairs / Services Job Description The Assistant Director of Education and Prevention Services leads campus efforts to provide evidence-based, data-informed substance misuse prevention programs for Virginia Tech students. Reporting to the Director of Hokie Wellness, the assistant director will lead a team of individuals to include a Substance Misuse Prevention Coordinator and the IMPACT (Initiating and Motivating a Positive Alcohol Culture Together) Peer Education and Prevention Team.The assistant director will be responsible for overseeing the continued growth and development, implementation, and evaluation of the substance misuse prevention efforts at Virginia Tech, with student well-being the central focus. They will provide leadership, supervision, training, and coaching to professional staff and IMPACT peers. This individual will stay current with public health research and will utilize best practices in prevention education to promote harm reduction strategies. In addition, they will employ a variety of methods to reach diverse audiences, including, but not limited to, one-to-one brief interventions, group workshops, campus outreach, and social platforms. The assistant director will regularly collaborate with campus departments, such as, Housing and Residential Life, Student Conduct, Athletics, and Fraternity and Sorority Life, to address substance misuse and promote student well-being. In addition, the assistant director will convene and/or serve on committees and working groups around substance misuse, student well-being, and game day strategies.The assistant director will join a talented team of student affairs professionals who are leading student well-being at Virginia Tech. The assistant director must cultivate strong relationship amongst team members, students, and the greater campus community. Required Qualifications The selected individual must be an educator committed to student success, inclusion, and well-being. A master's degree in public health, health education, health policy, social work, or another relevant field is required. The Assistant Director should have 2 years related experience in substance misuse prevention and education, and supervisory experience. Candidates with substance misuse prevention experience outside of a university setting are encouraged to apply. This individual will be committed to inclusivity, collaboration, and service and will display a high level of flexibility, organizational skills, teamwork, and innovative thinking.Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities and take initiative in a dynamic, fast paced environment. Ability to work collaboratively with a team of colleagues and serve as a representative of Hokie Wellness. A criminal background check is required. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing and implementing substance misuse primary prevention programs in a higher education setting. Experience leading and engaging peer educators. Experience evaluating and assessing the effectiveness of public health programming.
